S Jaipal Reddy (Sudini Jaipal Reddy) (born 16 January 1942) was an Indian politician & senior Congress Leader who served as the Member of the 15th Lok Sabha and the Minister of Science and Technology in the UPA Government.

 

He died on 28 July 2019 (1.28 am) as he has undergone treatment for pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital.

He represented the Chevella, a constituency of Telangana and was a senior member of the Indian National Congress.

He served as the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting in IK Gujral’s cabinet in 1998.

After 21 years, in 1999, he returned to the Indian National Congress. He was re-elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Miryalguda Constituency in 2004, and then he served as a Central Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Union Minister for Urban Development in UPA-1 (United Progressive Alliance).

He was re-elected as the Member of 15th Lok Sabha (Parliament), from Telangana’s Chevella constituency in 2009 and served as a Union Minister for Urban Development, and for Petroleum and Natural Gas.

He also served as the Union Minister for Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Science and Technology Ministry from 29 October 2012 to 18 May 2014.

S Jaipal Reddy Personal life

Jaipal Reddy was born in Nermatta, a village Chandur Mandal, in Nalgonda District of Telangana State. But it is actually from Maadgula, Mahbubnagar district in Telangana. He has been polio-stricken when he was 18-months old and used crutches to walk.

He pursued M.A. from the Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad. He has been an agriculturist. His favorite pastime is reading and has visited many countries. He married Lakshmi on 7 May 1960. They have one daughter and two sons.

Career

Jaipal Reddy was an MLA of Kalwakurthy, a constituency in Andhra Pradesh for four terms between 1969 and 1984.

 

He was a member of the INC-Indian National Congress Party but quit to protest against the emergency and joined the Janata Party in the year 1977.

He contested the 1980 Lok Sabha elections from Medak constituency opposing Indira Gandhi, which became unsuccessful. He was in the position of general secretary of the Janata Party from 1985 to 1988. He was elected five times to the Lok Sabha: the 8th Lok Sabha in the year 1984 (in alliance with TDP-Telugu Desam Party), the 12th in 1998 (again in alliance with Telugu Desam Party (TDP)), the 13th in 1999 (as a member of the Indian National Congress Party), the 14th in the year 2004 (as a member of the Indian National Congress Party, Miryalaguda constituency) and the 15th in the year 2009 (as a member of the Indian National Congress Party). For the two occasions, he was also a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1990–1996 and 1997–1998.

He held the position of leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha for a year from June 1991 to June 1992. In the period of 1999–2000, he also held the position as the Chairman of Committee of privileges.
